Melba Pattillo Beals is an American journalist, author, and educator, best known for her role as one of the Little Rock Nine, a group of African American students who were the first to integrate Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957. Beals was just 15 years old at the time of the desegregation of the school, and she faced intense racism and violence from white students and community members.
After completing high school, Beals went on to earn a bachelor's degree in journalism from San Francisco State University and a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. She worked as a reporter for various newspapers and magazines, including People magazine and San Francisco Examiner.
Beals has written several books about her experiences as a member of the Little Rock Nine, including the memoir "Warriors Don't Cry," which was published in 1994 and has been adapted into a play. She has also served as a professor of communication at Dominican University of California and currently works as a communications consultant and public speaker. Beals continues to be an advocate for civil rights and education reform.
